Gorilla Trek Rwanda

Uganda Gorillas & Ishasha Tree-Climbing Lions — Luxury Safari, 6 Days / 5 Nights

A Fly-and-Drive Journey Through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest & Queen Elizabeth National Park

Day One: Arrival in Kampala

Your journey into Uganda’s highlands begins the moment you step off the plane at Entebbe International Airport, where a private guide and vehicle are waiting to whisk you away from the terminal. The drive into Kampala unfolds along the shores of Lake Victoria, past roadside fruit stalls and the everyday rhythm of Ugandan life, before the city’s famous seven hills rise into view — though Kampala has long since spilled beyond them as the capital has grown.

For guests who wish to sample the city’s after-dark energy, private evening excursions can be arranged: a live-band restaurant, a rooftop lounge, or the theatrical, all-you-can-eat meat feast at Kampala’s famous Nyama Choma houses, complete with traditional dance performances.

Luxury lodge options in Kampala:

  • Kampala Serena Hotel — set within seven hectares of manicured water gardens in Nakasero, this five-star landmark blends elegant rooms with gourmet dining and a resort-style pool at the heart of the city.
  • Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort — a lakeside retreat on the shores of Lake Victoria, favored for its spacious grounds and quiet distance from the city bustle.
  • Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa — for arrivals who prefer to unwind beside the lake with a round of golf and a full spa menu before heading upcountry.

Transit time: approx. 2 hours · Distance: 40km · Meals: as arranged

Day Two: Fly to Bwindi & Cultural Immersion

After breakfast, you’re transferred back to Entebbe for a scenic light-aircraft flight to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest — roughly ninety minutes in the air, followed by a short road transfer into the forest itself. This flying start saves an entire day of driving and delivers you to one of the world’s great biodiversity hotspots by early afternoon.

Following lunch at your gorilla lodge, an afternoon cultural walk introduces you to the Batwa, the forest’s original inhabitants, who share their traditional way of life in a nearby community. The walk can also include visits to local beekeepers, a village school, and a traditional healer who still treats patients with forest herbs — an intimate counterpoint to the wildlife encounters ahead. Return to your lodge for sundowners and dinner.

Luxury lodge options in Bwindi:

  • Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge — Uganda’s highest lodge at over 2,000 meters, its ten volcanic-stone cottages command sweeping views toward the Virunga volcanoes, with Nyiragongo’s distant glow visible on clear nights.
  • Buhoma Lodge — perched just minutes from the park headquarters, its eight to ten cottages combine natural materials and safari-tent styling with some of the most reliable service in the forest.
  • Mahogany Springs — a serene, boutique property in the Buhoma sector prized for its privacy and understated comfort.
  • Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp — tented luxury set directly within the forest canopy, for travelers who want to fall asleep to the sound of the jungle.

Flight time: approx. 1.5 hours · Distance: 500km · Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Day Three: Ishasha Tree-Climbing Lions

This morning you head out to the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park — one of only two places in Africa where lions habitually climb trees, likely to escape biting insects and the heat of the plains while keeping watch over their territory. The open plains here see far fewer vehicles than the park’s northern sectors, so game drives feel wonderfully private as you search the fig trees for lions draped along the branches, alongside elephant, Uganda kob, buffalo, and hippos wallowing in the Ishasha and Ntungwe rivers. A private picnic lunch is served in the bush before you return to your Bwindi lodge for the evening.

Luxury lodge options in the Ishasha area (for travelers extending their stay in Queen Elizabeth, or as an alternative to returning to Bwindi):

  • Ishasha Wilderness Camp — the region’s standout luxury property, with just ten spacious tents strung along the Ntungwe River, where elephants and hippos often wander into view without a single game drive required.
  • Ishasha Jungle Lodge — comfortable, well-appointed lodging just outside the park boundary, known for its warm hospitality and easy access to the tree-climbing lion circuit.
  • Kyambura Gorge Lodge — part of the Volcanoes Safaris portfolio, this striking lodge overlooking the Kyambura Gorge is a favorite for combining lion-tracking with chimpanzee trekking.

Transit time: approx. 1 hour each way · Distance: 60km · Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner

Days Four & Five: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

These two days are built entirely around Bwindi’s mountain gorillas, and tracking a different habituated family each day maximizes both your viewing time and your photographic opportunities. Expert trackers set out ahead of the group each morning to locate the gorillas, then guide your trek in as directly as the terrain allows — treks can last anywhere from a few minutes to several hours, depending entirely on where the family has ranged that day.

Reaching a gorilla family and watching a silverback preside over his troop, with mothers and juveniles moving through the undergrowth around him, is the emotional centerpiece of the safari — an hour that most guests describe as unforgettable. Picnic lunches are taken in the forest, and both evenings end back at your lodge with dinner and drinks by the fire.

Transit time: 1 minute to 8 hours, dependent on gorilla movement · Meals: breakfast, lunch, dinner, both days

Day Six: Departure

After a final breakfast, you check out of Bwindi and drive through banana and tea plantations toward Kihiihi, where a scheduled morning flight (typically departing around 9:00am) returns you to Entebbe by mid-morning — in good time to connect with your international departure.

Transit time: approx. 1.5 hours (flight) · Distance: 500km · Meals: breakfast

Safari price: Per person, based on lodge category selected and group size.

Includes: Private airport transfers, scheduled light-aircraft flights, luxury lodge accommodation, all meals as noted, gorilla permits, park entrance fees, and private 4×4 game-viewing transportation with driver-guide throughout.

Since lodges vary widely in price, style, and location within each park sector, I’d be glad to build out two or three complete accommodation packages (e.g., an “ultra-luxury” version anchored by Clouds Mountain Gorilla Lodge and Ishasha Wilderness Camp, versus a “boutique-luxury” version with Buhoma Lodge and Ishasha Jungle Lodge) so you can compare at a glance — just let me know if that would help, or if you’d like this formatted as a downloadable document.

Gorilla Trekking Packing List

Clothing

  • Long-sleeved shirts in neutral/earth tones.
  • Long, sturdy trousers — tuck into socks or gaiters to block nettles and safari ants
  • Fleece or warm mid-layer — mornings at altitude are cold
  • Waterproof, breathable rain jacket — rain is likely any time of year
  • Gardening-style gloves — the forest is full of stinging nettles and thorny vines you’ll grab for balance
  • Gaiters (highly recommended) — keep ants and moisture out of your boots
  • Change of clothes to leave in the vehicle for after the trek

Footwear

  • Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support and good tread
  • Extra socks (wool or synthetic, not cotton)

Trekking Gear

  • Walking/hiking stick — usually provided free at the park, but bring your own trekking poles if you prefer
  • Daypack (20–30L) to carry water, rain gear, snacks
  • Water (2+ liters) and energy snacks
  • Porter tip cash — hiring a porter (often $15–20) is strongly recommended and supports the local community, even if you’re fit

Health & Comfort

  • Insect repellent (DEET-based)
  • Sunscreen and a sun hat
  • Personal first-aid kit — blister plasters, pain relievers, rehydration salts
  • Hand sanitizer
  • Face mask — some parks still recommend/require masks near gorillas since they’re susceptible to human respiratory illness

Photography

  • Camera with a good zoom lens — flash photography is prohibited near gorillas
  • Extra batteries/memory cards (charging can be unreliable at lodges)
  • Dry bag or plastic bags to protect gear from rain and mud

A few practical notes: trekking can range from a 30-minute walk to a 6+ hour hike depending on where the gorilla family is that day, and you must be at least 15 years old and keep a 7-meter distance from the gorillas. If you’re currently sick (cough, cold, flu-like symptoms), most parks will ask you to reschedule, since gorillas can catch human illnesses.
