Mountain gorillas and golden monkeys in Uganda: Bwindi and Mgahinga
Uganda offers mountain gorilla trekking at a lower cost than Rwanda, in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and smaller Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The permit costs $800 for foreign non-residents (raised from $700 in July 2024) and $700 for foreign residents, buying one hour with a habituated family; East African citizens pay far less.
Uganda also offers gorilla habituation experiences, unaffected by the 2024 increase: for $1,500, visitors join researchers for up to four hours with a family still being acclimatized, offered in Bwindi’s Rushaga sector. Nearby Mgahinga is one of few places to trek golden monkeys, found only in the Virunga volcanoes, with permits around $100.
Uganda’s lower prices and park diversity make it a popular base for combining gorillas with tree-climbing lions in Queen Elizabeth, Kazinga Channel boat safaris, or game drives in Murchison Falls and Lake Mburo.

Mountain gorillas in Rwanda: Volcanoes National Park
Rwanda’s gorilla trekking happens only in Volcanoes National Park, in the Virunga Massif, under three hours from Kigali. About 96 permits are issued daily across a dozen habituated families, capped at eight visitors each, buying one hour with the gorillas after a two-to-seven-hour walk.
Rwanda prices this as premium, low-volume tourism: standard permits cost $1,500, though EAC citizens and Rwandans pay around $200, and other African residents about $500. A low-season (November–May) discount combining Akagera and Nyungwe visits brings the price to roughly $1,050; high season (June–October) holds firm at $1,500. Permit revenue funds anti-poaching efforts, veterinary care, ranger pay, and community development (10% reinvested locally), a model credited with turning some former poachers into protectors. Demand often exceeds supply, so booking months ahead is essential, especially in peak dry seasons: June–September and December–February.

Golden monkeys, among Africa’s most striking yet least-known primates, live only in the Virunga Massif’s volcanic mountains spanning Uganda, Rwanda, and Congo. Named for their vivid orange-gold fur, they form lively troops of 30-80, foraging bamboo forests for shoots, fruit, and insects. Their acrobatic energy makes trekking a shorter, easier, more affordable alternative to gorilla trekking.
Uganda’s best spot is Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, its smallest, nestled among three extinct volcanoes near Rwanda and DRC, part of the Virunga Conservation Area. It hosts one habituated gorilla family (Nyakagezi) and two golden monkey troops, tracked via guided bamboo-forest hikes. Rwanda’s neighboring Volcanoes National Park shares this ecosystem, together making the Virunga region a premier destination for both gorillas and golden monkeys.

Chimpanzee trekking is Uganda’s second-biggest primate draw after gorillas, and much more affordable and accessible. Kibale Forest National Park, home to nearly 100 habituated chimps and other primates, is Africa’s top chimp-trekking site. Permits cost $250 (up from $200 in 2024), with resident discounts, and are rarely sold out. Kibale’s habituation experience offers an extended, pre-dawn encounter with chimps as they wake and feed.
Cheaper alternatives include Budongo Forest (Murchison Falls), around $120–130, and Kyambura Gorge (Queen Elizabeth National Park), an underground rift valley forest costing about $100 but with less reliable sightings. Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest also offers chimp tracking, though its chimps range widely, making encounters less predictable than in Kibale.
