Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans)
Volcanoes National Park (Parc National des Volcans) lies in northwest Rwanda’s Musanze District, part of the Virunga Massif shared with Uganda and the DRC. Rwanda’s roughly 160-square-kilometer section holds five volcanoes—Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo—and is the world’s premier mountain gorilla sanctuary, where Dian Fossey founded the Karisoke Research Center in the 1960s-70s.
The park’s altitude gradient—bamboo forest, Hagenia-Hypericum woodland, and Afro-alpine moorland—supports golden monkeys, buffalo, elephants, and 200+ bird species, including many Albertine Rift endemics. About a dozen gorilla families are habituated for tourism, with others reserved for research.
Rwanda has built the park into a high-value, low-volume conservation model: tourism revenue funds anti-poaching efforts and community development, helping mountain gorillas become a rare growing great ape population.
